Marija Bozinovska Jones (MBJ)’s edible offerings are handmade chocolate confections infused with psychoactive plant extracts.

The psychoactive substances included in the chocolate induce alterations in consciousness and are meant to activate embodied knowledge, a type of knowing from within. For Sunlight Doesn’t Need a Pipeline, the edible offering takes shape of a sun and contains charcoal. Jones works with hallucinogens as an invitation to dissolve reality and to open doors to alternative possible worlds and collective world-building. In this instance, her psychoactive gift is an invitation despite climate emergency and neoliberal continuum.

Jones’ use of edibles is a direct reference to trends in consuming hallucinogenics, as well as devotional practices. Making an offering is giving something away without expecting anything in return. The votive gesture alludes to a gift economy as an alternative to dominant systems of value exchange – economic and affective – to counteract a scarcity mindset adopted as a social norm.
